The founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, has come under public scrutiny following his role in officiating the wedding of Pastor Chris Okafor and his wife, Pearl, amid an ongoing church-related dispute.
The wedding ceremony, which was conducted despite unresolved allegations, has continued to generate widespread discussion after Nollywood actress Doris Ogala accused Pastor Okafor of dishonesty. She claimed that she had been romantically involved with the cleric since 2017 and believed marriage was forthcoming, only to later discover online that he had married someone else.
In spite of these accusations and Ogala’s threats to release further details about their alleged relationship, the wedding proceeded as scheduled, with Pastor Ashimolowo leading the service.
The development has attracted criticism from another cleric, Dr Charles Apoki, who openly voiced his dissatisfaction with Pastor Ashimolowo’s involvement. In a video posted on his Facebook page, Apoki questioned the moral wisdom of officiating such a wedding while serious allegations were still unresolved.
“I am ashamed of you. Any society that has no rules will collapse,” Apoki said.
He emphasized that religious leaders must carefully consider the implications of their actions, especially when moral integrity and accountability are at stake.
Dr Apoki further alleged that Pastor Okafor engaged in inappropriate conduct, accusing him of abandoning his wife and children while maintaining an immoral relationship with actress Doris Ogala. He also referenced circulating videos online in which Okafor was allegedly involved in staged miracles, arguing that such actions damage the credibility of Christianity.
According to Apoki, publicly aligning with individuals facing grave accusations may be seen as tacit approval and could weaken the moral standing of the church.
To reinforce his argument, he cited biblical examples such as Achan, Ananias, and Sapphira, who faced punishment for moral failures, underscoring accountability as a core Christian value. He also compared the situation to traditional African customs, where communities often distanced themselves from those accused of wrongdoing.
“You don’t greet him. You don’t collect fire from his kitchen. You don’t trade with him. Because when you do that, you seem to approve of his conduct,” he stated.
As of the time of reporting, neither Pastor Ashimolowo nor Pastor Okafor has publicly reacted to Dr Apoki’s comments, as public attention continues to intensify around the unfolding controversy.
